Bijo is a sweet and simple guy in my telecom class at Keltron. Bijo is from the north of Kerala. For the uninitiated, the people to the north are ardent fans of Mammootty and those to the south are ardent fans of Mohanlal. Also for the uninitiated, the locals of Trivandrum (ya ya it includes me) are perhaps one of the rudest lot in the State. Altercations between the fans of both actors are pretty common in the city. So much by way of introduction.
Last day Bijo decided to see a movie (starring Mammootty of course); he hires an autorikshaw and goes to the theatre. As the rikshaw approached the theatre, the auto driver peeped his head out, looks at the Mammootty poster, turns back and stares at Bijo. The stare gradually turns to scorn; driver opens his mouth; theri abhisheekam begins.....FLASH! FLASH!....Ninakkonnum veere oru cinemayum kaanaan kittiyilla alleedaa....FLASH! FLASH! FLASH!!!.....Bijo barely escapes from the scene.
Next day Bijo comes to me and says,
“Enthuvaada eee naattukaarude prashnam. Aaa auto driver enne thalli illaa ennee olloo; kashtichu rekshapettu. Njaan ithrayum pulicha theri ithu vare keettittilla.”
I grinned and said “Welcome to Tvm. Our motto is ‘Live and let die’."
P.S. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

I am lost again :(
Sorry, I didn't bother translating it. The auto driver swears at Bijo, castigates him for going to see a Mammootty film (to put it mildly). Next day Bijo comes to class and asks what's wrong with people here and that it's the first time he's hearing such expletives. I said "Get used to it". ;)
I have heard about the rude and selfish nature of Tvm'ites too, particularly localites! There are several anecdotes about it too. But this regional loyalty towards Lal and Mammooty is new information for me!
@silverine: There was a film released some years back called "Harikrishnans" starring Mammootty and Mohanlal. Due to regional loyalty factors, the film had 2 different endings in the North and South, to appease fans on both sides. But this is actually the 1st time I've heard people preventing others to see films. Dog in the manger policy, to put it aptly.
That was ridiculous treatment meted out. Anyway, I have always regarded Mohanlal as a far superior actor.
Hi,
I have been following your blog for sometime, thought i would add my two cents worth to this one!
Well its easy for people from North and south, because you can easily pledge allegiance to the majority section and get away with it!
If you are a Trichur guy(as is the case with me) or an Ernakulam guy, then you are lost!
Neither can you boo and whistle at flop Mamootty films nor can you pass comments at flop Mohanlal films(unless you particularly like being beaten up by fans!!). Its a classical case of the worst of all the worlds for us!
:-)
I am from trivandrum, but i feel people from the north are well mannered and polite compared to people down south. When I was studying in a college out side kerala, there was this girl from trissur who never used to talk to TVM guys including me eventhough we managed to create our own mallu group(to protect our girls :) . Later when she joined our friends circle , she told me the reason - her mom has specifically instructed her not talk to any boy from tvm!
@karthik: I 'was' a fan of Lal, I 'was' a fan of Mammootty. I liked them when they did simple guy roles (in their mid careers). Stopped being a fan when film makers made them larger than life characters in films. :)
@nitram: Well here, booing n all is a common thing. I've heard that they even get paid for booing by fan associations to degrade the films of other actors. Thanks for dropping your comment this time ;)
@ajith: Unfortunately, that's the stereotypical description associated with us; and to an extent that might be true. When you go to the north, people are more friendly, you can feel the difference; and here, just watch the rudeness of shopkeepers, hotel owners, conductors, et al. Not saying that everyone fits the description, but still.....just saying.
paavam tvm kaare naanamkeduthum alledey?
ithrayum nalla swabhavam ulla aalkkare vere evdeyengilum kaanan pattumo
Talking of Tvm...reminds of the time I made some ummm observations about Tvm only to invite the collective wrath of the Tv'mites! :|
hehe..i got the first taste of hardcore TVM flavour when I joined college..until then I never realised the "uniqueness"!!;-)
aah..btw avanne nammal pinee pokikolaam!!;-D
@praveen: Illeeyilla! orikkalumilla! Chilappam Vatican City il kandeekkaam. :P
@silverine: It's very hot in April/May but it's nothing compared to cities like Delhi. Sept to Jan is the best time to be here. But then, comparing the climate with B'lore it's pretty hot. How about a vacation in here, I'll take you to the beaches (Guide fee: Rs 1000/day). :P
@mathew: Hehe, pakshe athu konde ippum eethu Hamburgilum jeevikkaan padichille. Avante kaariyam njaan eettu, I'm teaching him the basic Tvm flavor now. :D
The reason why I said that we don't dare boo in cinemas is coz the fans of the star in the movie think that we are affiliated to the rival fan club and/or we got paid to boo down the movie! Some confused lot i must say!
P.S. The only fan club i would be affiliated to is one that appreciates good movies and wishes bad ones (that waste your time and money) burn in hell!
@nitram: Yeah, I understood what you said. In tvm, one can't boo at Lal films and escape, but I think, I think the effect is not same for Mammootty movies. Lal fan associations are pretty strong here. Anyway, who cares! I've lost all interest in seeing these shoody Malayalam movies of today.
